The goal of the EMS fellowship at LLU is to train well rounded and knowledgeable EMS physicians. This occurs through weekly didactics, our state-of-the-art medical simulation center, participation in state-wide monthly EMS education conferences and attendance at the NAEMSP Medical Director course. Multiple EMS/Disaster drills and trainings are also offered including HAZ-MAT training, MCI, confined space rescue, and tactical.

While there are required experiences that must take place for the fellow to graduate, we also recognize that many EMS fellows will have specific goals for their EMS training and we will make every effort to accommodate additional training opportunities that may be unique to a fellow’s interests.

LLU EMS offers the unique opportunity for the EMS fellow to respond to calls in their own response vehicle! The gives the fellow additional autonomy as well as the opportunity to preferentially respond to higher acuity calls. The EMS fellow also has required time spent responding to scene calls with local fire departments. The fellow will also work with the AMR regional medical director to assist with QI projects and medic training/oversight.

Multiple mass gathering events occur in the Inland Empire region annually. Our faculty and fellows staff multiple raves and concert venues. This year we will participate in providing medical care at both the Stagecoach and Coachella music festivals.

Our fellowship works closely with our region’s Local EMS Agencies (ICEMA and REMSA) responsible for EMS direction and protocol/policy development. The fellow will have responsibilities within these agencies to both assist and lead on QI projects, policy and protocol development and other regulatory functions. The fellow will also sit on multiple committees responsible for advising EMS practice in our region. The fellow and EMS faculty also attend quarterly meetings of the EMS Medical Director Association of California (EMDAC). 

Loma Linda University Medical Center is a tertiary care, academic medical center. We are a Level 1 trauma receiving center, stroke center and STEMI receiving center. The fellow will work clinically as an attending physician in the emergency department, responsible for treating patients as well as overseeing residents from our EM residency training program.
